Waterproof Phones

I run 3-5 miles twice a week and use my phone for tracking my speed, time, pace and calories burnt etc (with Cardio Trainer and Noom weight loss apps).
I get paranoid every single time I'm out in the rain that my phone will get too wet and die-in the past I have had 3 phones die on me from water damage!

So I have decided to get a waterproof phone.
I wanted the Sony Erriccson Xperia Active ( a sports phone-small but rugged and waterproof to 1 metre) but with Sony buying out the whole share the old range (at least in the UK) has been ditched and only Sony branded phones are available on contract now.
I have read about 2 waterproof Fujitsu phones (quad core and dual core) and a waterproof Panasonic phone- no names available for any yet- does anybody know much about these phones,which ones would be best for my running needs and/or when they would be released in the UK I would be massively grateful ( I have asked around the local phone shops and they know NOTHING about them)

My sister uses the SE Xperia Active, it's been for nearly a year now and she goes to run and does her fitness with it without any issues so far, the waterproofing is quite good as I've made my experiments when she wasn't looking... :laugh:
And by some reviews I've read here and there, the phone is worth it. Can't tell about the other phones though. ;)

Yeah I wanted that phone as it seems ideal for my needs (small but at the mo I've got a SE X10 mini pro so I'm used to small) however ,since sony bought all of SE it is unavailable in the UK(except for sim free and I can't afford that (£200-£250)-understandably sony want to push their new phones with (SONY on the front and not SE) but that means the last batch of SE phones have been lost:(

Maybe you should consider buying one online..? ;)

Can't afford the upfront cost and I have a contract phone able to be upgraded in May but can't afford anything else than monthly payments for a new phone.

I've got to admit that does look good.

But now I'm really confused as to what phone to upgrade to as and when the contract comes to an end.

You can find out when it comes to and end by getting in touch with your service provider, I should think, or take it into a shop.

Depends what criteria you have for an upgrade.

Mid june my contract is up.
Android is a must.
Anything better than a nokia n8 would be good (my friend has one and he is still raving about it after all this time and i wanna shut him up-even if it's just with waterproofing and put my phone in water and say 'right now do that to the n8 and watch it die!')
I'm paying about £20 a month at the moment and don't want to go much higher
Video and camera quality not too important but preferable.
Flash player to watch tv/video would be good ( annoying being stuck on android 2.1 and not having flash for anything lower than 2.3)

Suggestions?

Maybe the Samsung Rugby Smart..?

Runs on Gingerbread, 3.7", Waterproof, dust proof and good shock resistance.

I'm liking the look of that.
It's not out in the UK yet (which would explain why I've never heard of it) but since I've gotta wait until June there's a chance yet.
It looks like I'm just gonna have to be patient and see what phones come in in the next few months in the UK,I'm not good with patience but we'll see........

Never heard about the waterproof phone. It seems new idea to me. can anyone tell me some good waterproof phone which support Android ?

That is a VERY basic phone (released 2008!)

Both released basically now April/May 2012
(I'm gonna get one of those two -both have have good and bad points,at the moment leaning towards the panasonic but not by much-between june and august,after my contract runs out)

There is also a very high end range of waterproof/dustproof Fujitsu phones now scheduled for end of 2012.

Makes you wonder if it'd be worth waiting 'til the end of the year then.

We'd love to know which you choose. :)

( I just don't think it'll be in my budget and I need a waterproof phone asap for running with)

The features on it are incredible and unused in other phones:
camera takes 7 photos every time you press the button and saves the best of the 7,biometric fingerprint scanner for unlocking phone, noise cancellation from formula 1 tech, frequency changing of calls according to age and gender of user-changing callers' voice frequency to ideal hearing frequency of user, slowing down of callers' voices if they talk to quickly to be able to hear them more clearly,monitoring of user's breathing while asleep so when alarm is set you are taken from deep sleep to light sleep before woken properly.

All these features are on top of more expected ones- quadcore nvidia tegra 3 processor, 13 meg camera,1920 x 720 4.6 inch screen, Ice Cream Sandwich on android (but also on windows OS too) and oh yeah waterproof/dustproof.

That's gonna be a couple of hundred I should think. 13 meg camera and screen size suggest £300ish minumum.

I wouldn't go for those phones because of the brand name.

I'd rather stick with companies that are reputable for phone building (obviously they all started somewhere), but you see what I mean. :P

I see that point too BUT the advent of the smartphone has shaken up the mobile phone market massively (only a few years ago people would have laughed at apple releasing a phone and commanding a market share-and in fact did as a story about it was run as an april fools day gag a year before the iphone was announced!), HTC were unknown, samsung were there but not a big player and nokia were the biggest group by a mile-compare to now!! lol

Panasonic have released phones in the past (what I am referring to as the age of the dumb phone ha ha) but concentrated on plasma tvs (oops! sales plummeting this year!!).
I would imagine that both panasonic and fujitsu have had phones in japan (completely different market) for years just not in western world.

Also waterproof phones is a new thing so the first company to do it really well (ie a damn good phone as well as protected) could clean up and score a massive hit
(I know there have been ones in the past-JCB,Land Rover,Motorola Defy,SE Active etc but none have been outstanding phones just well protected)

If the fujitsu phone is not a massive hit then there is something wrong with the world!

I have really confused about this question that waterProof Phones. I think it's talk about the case for phone by which you can easily protect your phone from water. I have used Land Rover S2.

Thank you so much!!! I had not seen about these at all and I was losing hope of getting a decent waterproof phone after I read that Panasonic were not going to bother releasing the eluga on a contract i the uk (germany and Italy only in europe apparently)
My hope is restored, now I just have to hope that sony have sorted out the glitch in quality control that was the x10i mini pro (it's an ok phone but has far too slow a processor and too many niggles and not enough support from sony -too many models I suspect and ditching support for the older models/hardware far too quickly, if a phone contract is two years you expect the manufacturer to be supporting that model for that period!)

Doesn't look like the acro s is coming to the uk (been removed from uk sony website), the panasonic eluga is not coming to the uk, the fujitsu phone is taking forever to be launched in europe let alone the uk and the samsung rugby smart seems to have disappeared off the planet- my contract can be upgraded NOW so it looks like the xperia go is my only option.

The best solution to your problem is getting a waterproof case for your existing phone. It prevents water entering to your phone and is a cost-effective solution to your problem.

I have gone for the SONY xperia go with a IP67 rating -if people don't know what that means it relates to 6/6 for dustproof and 7/8 for waterproof (to 1 metre for 30 minutes). It is a mid range phone that does things reasonably well and is about the the same size as the iphone 4. If you really want a waterproof phone and live in UK I would recommend getting one.

The SONY Acro S is a better very high end phone with a IP57 rating but very few regions/countries have had it released.
I have looked into this a lot so any questions post them here or on my profile.

My basic conclusions of waterproof phones are:
JCB/Land Rover S2 - Was part of a series of old style phones (non smartphone)
Motorola DEFY/DEFY+ - Was good but outdated now
Samsung XCover - See Above
Sony Ericcsson Active - Wasn't ever a great phone but was more modern than the above two
Panasonic Eluga - Mid range phone with great looks but niggles and only released in a few countries.
Panasonic Eluga Power - Much better but released in even fewer countries
Samsung Rugby Smart - Mid range phone, too many buttons apparently slow processor

Before anyone mentions it, the spray on waterproofing has been shown to work in prototype BUT has not been used in any model released to mass market.

Personally I don't rate waterproof cases.

Most of the time they easily break, or render all the ports inaccessible (thereby meaning you'll be taking it in and out to charge so are less likely to remember EVERY time, any time you forget it is not waterproof!), or really bulky so phone cannot sit comfortably in pocket(I'm looking at you otterbox) and often make speaker and one or both sides of phone calls muffled and weakens strength of 3g/GPS/general phone signal.

The best that I have seen is LIFEPROOF range but still could not honestly recommend it.

xperia s is a good phone but it is not waterproof, the acro s is but that is a different phone.
